SARS-CoV-2, commonly known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been shown to cause considerable mortality in patients worldwide. As an acute respiratory illness, its severe effects to the pulmonary system have been greatly observed and studied, however, its cardiovascular manifestations should not be ignored – especially for patients with heart conditions. COVID-19 can affect any individual and cause symptoms ranging from mild to very severe. While old age and prior medical conditions lead to an increased risk of developing severe illness, the devastating effects of infection have been observed in younger populations as well.
We have observed as COVID-19 could affect all organ functions acutely, it could affect various organ systems well after the acute disease has resolved. These long-term complications can be equally debilitating, as lungs, heart, vascular system, kidneys, and even the brain could be affected. Many patients with mild disease presentation have reported persistent symptoms months later, making the post- recovery phase of their lives more difficult.
To help address the recovery needs of patients who experience cardiac symptoms and/or complications due to COVID-19, Mount Sinai Heart has created an evaluation and monitoring program to provide patients with access to appropriate testing services and care, based on each patient’s individual need. Our cardiologists will utilize a goal-directed diagnostic and therapeutic approach to effectively manage a patients’ cardiac concerns.
